Reality never quite lived up to his expectations. Which was fine, because books were a season-pass to a better place. Specifically, on one ill-fated fifth-grade geography excursion, there was a book, left unattended on a bus… A few, furtive chapters was all it took. An astounding world! Where bullies got their comeuppance and where being average simply meant your moment had yet to arrive. The grail vanished along with the tour but the indelible memory remained.
Life moved on to law school, moved on to law, where writing fantasy meant contracts and spells to sap the souls and fortunes of others. The boy fled the company of such fell wizards and fell in with a company of corporate pirates instead. It was a living. But it was not a life. He longed for a world, glimpsed between stolen pages, so long ago.
Every story needs a hero. Had his wife been a character in one of his favorite books, she’d have been a general to armies. She booted their old lives overboard and led the march to a foreign land, filled with great forests, caves of wonder, and castles fit for dragons.
Once again, the boy set to exploring dungeons, drawing maps and prying open the pages to fantastical worlds…
